Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) H5N1 has been confirmed near Burscough! A 3km Captive Bird Controlled Zone is in place. Public risk is low, but do not touch sick or dead birds. Report ill birds to APHA (03000 200 301) or dead wild birds to Defra (03459 335577).

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Confirmed Near Burscough
Simonswood Parish Council has been informed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) that a case of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) H5N1 has been confirmed near Burscough.
As a precaution, a 3km Captive Bird Controlled Zone has been declared from Thursday, 24 October 2025.
Public Advice
The risk to the public remains very low, but please do not touch any sick, dead, or injured birds.
If you keep birds — whether a smallholding, pets, or poultry:
- Follow all restrictions within the Controlled Zone
- Keep your birds housed or isolated from wild birds
- Note that some movements require a licence
If Your Birds Are Unwell
- Contact your vet immediately
- Report suspected cases to APHA on 03000 200 301
